Empty Meta Descriptions: How to Fix Blank Content

An empty meta description element has no candidate summary text; distinguish it from a missing description and a length review.

Quick answer

An empty meta description is a declared <meta name="description"> whose content is empty after trimming. It is different from a missing description element, and it is different from a description that exists but needs a length review. Add useful page-specific text when the page benefits from a controlled summary, then verify the source that users and crawlers receive.

What the issue means

The description element gives search systems a candidate summary for a page. An empty element gives them no text from that field. Search engines can write a snippet from page content instead, so an empty description is not a ranking penalty or a guarantee that no snippet will appear.

An empty description can come from a template variable that rendered blank, a CMS field that was saved without content, or markup copied between page types. Check the final HTML rather than only the editor preview.

Why it matters for SEO

A useful description can help a searcher understand what a result is about and decide whether to visit. It does not force Google to use that text, and improving it does not guarantee more clicks or rankings. The value is highest on important pages where the page content alone does not provide a clear short summary.

How NOTABIS detects it

For each crawled HTML page, NOTABIS counts meta[name="description"] elements and trims their content. The empty-meta-description finding is created when at least one description element exists and at least one has empty content. A page with no description element is reported separately by missing-description; multiple elements are reported by multiple-meta-descriptions.

The check does not judge writing quality, uniqueness, or whether a search engine will display the text.

How to check it yourself

  1. View the page source and search for meta name="description".
  2. Confirm that the content value contains meaningful text after whitespace is removed.
  3. Check server-rendered output and the rendered DOM if a script populates the head.
  4. Compare the description with the page's title and main content.
  5. Check for duplicate description elements in the template.

How to fix it

Populate one description element with a concise, accurate summary of that URL. Make the value come from the correct page record or template fallback, escape it for HTML, and keep it out of pages where a description is not appropriate. Remove duplicate tags and re-crawl representative page types.

For a product page, describe the product and its useful differentiator. For an editorial page, describe the question answered and the audience. Do not list keywords or promise content the page does not contain.

When this is intentional or does not need fixing

Some utility, account, or non-indexable pages may not need a manually controlled description. Keep that decision consistent with their access and indexing intent, and avoid treating a decorative empty field as a reason to expose private content.
